ReGeneration Roundup: 2008-07-09
I’ve always been a sucker for cool new developments on the renewable energy front, and the latest from the folks at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in the UK promises not to disappoint. Dubbed the Anaconda, this 200 meter long tube generates electricity by bobbing along in the ocean’s tides, an energy source that will not be going away anytime soon. Check out the videos of this available through Inhabitat. Hats off to Francis Farley and Rod Rainey, who conceived this beautifully simple idea.
Mercedes has announced that it will be completely eliminating fossil-fuel run vehicles by 2015. By then, the company hopes to build cars and trucks that rely instead on fuel cells, electricity and biofuels to run. From the company’s recent moves to put EcoCity taxi cabs on the streets of London and develop a lithium ion battery powered hybrid car, Mercedes is well on its way to meet this goal. The ReGeneration commends Mercedes and other companies who are giving fossil fuels the boot. This is exactly the sort of eco-innovation that is going to really make a difference in the long run!
Alright, so I’m also a sucker for any stories that have to do with beer, but this one is much too cool for me to keep to myself. Putting the “party” back in political parties, the Democratic National Committee has announced that the fleet of vehicles they will be using for their convention in August will be powered by ethanol derived from waste beer donated by the Molson Coors Brewing Company. It is comforting to know that it will all be going to a good cause. Cheers!
