ReGeneration Roundup: 2008-07-23
Since I referenced it during our coverage of Netroots Nation 2008 and because it’s big news, it seems fitting that I begin this week’s roundup with a summary of the blog coverage Al Gore’s now-famous “moonshot” speech has garnered. In the speech, Gore challenged the United States to move to a 100 percent renewable-energy economy within only ten years. To do this, the former vice president proposes accelerated development of solar, wind and geothermal energy, as well as moving more resources towards research in alternative sources. The reaction from the blogosphere ranges, as you’d expect, from the cautiously optimistic to the doubtful, with the most heated debates in the comments section of each post. What do you think? Can it be done? If so, what will it take from us, the concerned citizens of the world, to make it happen? Let us know in the comments section below.
On a slightly more disturbing (yet inspiring) note, the Earthrace, a pretty sweet-looking trimaran powerboat, has broken the world speed record for circumnavigating the globe without leaving a carbon footprint by 14 whole days, despite being threatened by pirates and a malfunctioning auto-pilot program. Parts of the boat were made from hemp-based composite and the bedding foams were made from canola oil. The boat not only has the power to move around the Earth at an incredible speed, but can even submerge up to 23 feet underwater. The disturbing part, you ask? Well, the boat was powered by biodiesel made from RECYCLED HUMAN FAT. Who knows? Maybe this is killing two birds with one stone: cutting a few inches off our collective waistlines and providing green energy to power our future at the same time.
Good news for you “green” singles out there. Green Daily has compiled a list of dating and networking web sites for environmentally-conscious folks. Looking for a 20-something animal rights activist who eats local and enjoys long moonlit walks to the recycling center? I’m pretty sure you’ll find them on at least one of the sites listed there. Want something a little more platonic? Don’t worry. They’ve got you covered. Have a look when you get a chance, and let us know how it worked out. We’ll be expecting an update this Valentine’s Day!

“biodiesel made from RECYCLED HUMAN FAT?” does this mean I can eat all of the chocolate and ice cream I want? I think this may be the start of something grand.

Todd: Good stuff. Looks like there are a number of options of renewable energy alternatives, and I bet there will be even more options in the future. If even a tiny fraction of those renewable energy alternatives materialize on a bigger scale, we should be much better off.
Let’s see how this develops.
