Staples and Dell Launch Computer Recycling Program

markbuckley I’m pleased to announce that Dell and Staples are launching an exciting new consumer computer recycling program. Beginning today, all 1500 Staples stores across the United States will accept any Dell branded computer equipment for free recycling.  This builds on Staples’ existing technology recycling program, which recycles cell phones and smaller electronics for free, non-Dell brand computers and printers for a $10 fee, and ink and toner cartridges in return for $3 back in Staples Rewards. Staples is excited to be the first national retailer to offer Dell customers an everyday, free drop-off recycling option for their technology products and we continue to look for new ways to make it easy for customers to make a difference for the environment – what we call EcoEasy.

Staples and Dell both know that the key to increasing recycling rates for used computers lies in making recycling easy, convenient, affordable and responsible. As part of the program, Staples will recycle any amount of Dell branded computers, monitors, printers and peripherals for free, without having to make a purchase. Staples and Dell are working with Eco International, a leading national recycler, to ensure that products collected are being managed responsibly.  Eco International meets both Staples’ and Dell’s stringent recycling requirements and a third party auditor will regularly ensure these requirements are being met.  Chief among those is an absolute prohibition on the export of waste to developing nations.

I’ll be joining representatives from Dell at a press conference this morning in New York City to commemorate the launch of this program.  We believe it will recover millions of pounds of used equipment for recycling. We’re inviting any consumer who has a used Dell computer to come into a Staples store today and recycle it.

Mark Buckley is the vice president of environmental affairs at Staples.

  • Thanks for the comment, Brad.

For now this program is available in the U.S., both Staples and Dell will be actively monitoring how the program performs and considering how it may be expanded in the future. We’ll certainly keep you posted about future expansion. Stay tuned!
